\"Marin Sorescu\" National Theater announces the premiere of the show \"Caliban and the Witch\"<\/a> by Mihaela Dr\u0103gan, after \"The Tempest\" by William Shakespeare. The premiere will take place during the Craiova International Shakespeare Festival on May 17, 2024 at 6:00 p.m., at the Ramada Plaza Hotel. The show is a co-production of Giuvlipen and the \"Marin Sorescu\" National Theater from Craiova and will be performed in Romani and Romanian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  The cast includes the actresses Iulia Colan, Anastasia Dade, Nicoleta Ghi\u021b\u0103 and Zita Moldovan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

             \"Caliban and the Witch\" is a rewriting of Shakespeare's \"The Tempest\", the title inspired by Silvia Federica's book of the same name and the revolutionary texts and speeches of Frantz Fanon, Angela Davis, Malcom X, Ghassan Kanafani. On the occasion of the premiere, the bilingual theater volume of the same name will be released, which will include both Mihaela Dr\u0103gan's play and \"The Tempest\" by William Shakespeare, these being published in Romanian and Romani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The publication of the play Furtuna\/ O Baro Bri<\/em>\u015bind<\/em> in the translation of Noric\u0103 Costache is an editorial event with a major significance for the history of literature in general, but also for the Roma around the world. As the first Romanian translation of a Shakespearean text was the play \"Iuliu Caesar\", performed by captain S. Stoica, in 1844, we have, 180 years after this act, a first translation of a Shakespeare play in the Romanian language - in the Romanian space. A major event, to which we invite you to participate on Friday, May 17, at 5:30 p.m., in the preamble of the premiere that will take place at the Ramada Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

             Giuvlipen is the first Roma theater company in Romania, founded in 2014 by artists Mihaela Dr\u0103gan and Zita Moldovan. \"They are the vanguard of the Roma revolution, a counter-attack, through art and activism - against centuries of oppression.\" (Reuters Agency) In the absence of a State Roma Theater in Romania, the independent theater company Giuvlipen collaborated and made co-productions over time with the State Jewish Theater, the Andrei Mure\u0219anu Theater, the Romanian Playwrights Theater, the National Dance Center of Bucharest and the Marin Sorescu National Theater and in 2020 he was awarded the British Council prize at the UNITER Gala. With numerous participations in national and international festivals, Giuvlipen wrote history in contemporary Roma theater, their art being provocative, experimental and highly performative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Mihaela Dr\u0103gan is a multidisciplinary artist with studies in acting who lives in Bucharest and works professionally in several other countries. In 2014, together with other Roma actresses, she founded the Giuvlipen Theater for which she is an actress, director and playwright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
