This year celebrates the 400th anniversary of the birth of the great French playwright Molière, on which occasion the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater in Craiova opens the 2022 / 2023 season with the show AVARUL, a text translated especially for this event by Vlad Russo.
The comedy AVARUL bears the signature of the director Felix Alexa, the scenography belongs to Andrade Chiriac, and Claudiu Bleonț is the main actor.
The first performances will take place on October 15, 16, 22, 2022, at 19:00, at the theater's "Amza Pellea" Hall.
Molière's masterpiece, The Miser becomes today a much more nuanced text than it was considered for centuries, more unpredictable and even premonitory. And that's because in today's world, 400 years after Molière's birth, at the anniversary hour, The Miser acquires new tragic-comic values, turns into a cynical image and almost clinical of the immediate present. This famous text now reveals itself as a painstaking, detailed, darkly humorous x-ray of a paranoid delusion that has gripped humanity. No character in The Miser is completely innocent, just as Harpagon does not lack a trace of humanity, even if distorted at times.
Duplicity is the main feature of the world we live in and it is apparent in every detail of my show. A duplicity of the characters, of the ever-changing space, of passions and desires that are intensely expressed, yet ephemeral. A duplicity that multiplies and refines itself subtly, like an unseen disease.
The Miser The Miser it is for me, the image of a world in decay, with an apparently happy ending, of circumstance. An illusion of happiness, in fact.
Felix Alexa, the director of the show

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-1673) assumed the pseudonym Molière, inspired by the name of a small village in the south of France. Through all his work, Molière showed the truth by laughing. In 1665, Molière founded the theater company "L'Illustre Théâtre", patronized by Louis XIV himself, the Sun King. "L'Illustre Théâtre" had a remarkable impact on the history of French theatre.
Molière wrote over thirty comedies in verse and prose, he is the creator of farces-ballet and comedies-ballet, dramatic texts written specifically to be performed at the king's court. Molière launched the criticism of morals in the classical French theater, he ridiculed the corruption and pedantry of the nobility (Ridiculous Precious; Don Juan; The Misanthrope), religious hypocrisy (Tartuffe), greed (Avarul) and thirst for success (Gentile Bourgeois), ideas about marriage, education and family (School men; School of Wives; George Dandin; Scholarly Women). He denounced the charlatanism of the doctors of the time (Unwilling Doctor; The Imaginary Patient) and satirized the unnatural play of the "great comedians" at the Hotel de Bourgogne in the comedy Improvisation from Versailles.
Now, 400 years after his birth, as a sign of respect and appreciation, the theater world has declared 2022 The Year of Molière, with Molière events taking place throughout the year in France. The celebration began on January 15, 2022 at Versailles, a special place for his artistic destiny, with an impressive exhibition in honor of the author.
