“Marin Sorescu” National Theater in Craiova announces the registrations

or the sixth edition of the International Festival for Young Directors

THEATER NETWORKING TALENTS (TNT) / Craiova / 2-5 iulie 2024

“Marin Sorescu” National Theater is pleased to announce the registration opening for the sixth edition of TNT, dedicated to students at theatre directing faculties from Romania and abroad. The festival, an important and confirmed launching pad for new and relevant voices in theatre directing, awaits this year’s graduates of the 2024 promotions (bachelor’s and master’s degrees), invited to register with their graduation performances, until May 6, 2024.

Conceived as an artistic platform to showcase the freshest and strongest visions in the theater of the new generation, TNT has meant, from its beginnings, essential sharing of experience, between emerging artists and professionals in the performing arts. The festival coordinated by director Bobi Pricop will once again bring to Craiova, between July 2 and 6, artists from all fields of the performing arts, proposing alternative directions, and unprecedented and experimental creative areas. This year, special attention is paid to playwrights and translators working in the field of performing arts.

The festival, organized by “Marin Sorescu” National Theater and the Arts and Media Department of the University of Craiova, offers the new generations of directors the opportunity to present their graduation performances in a professional theater, within a showcase, in front of an audience made up of theater managers, independent producers or festival selectors. It is also open to actors, set designers, composers, choreographers, performers, theater critics or researchers, through the People of TNT program.

There will also be interdisciplinary lab meetings, colloquia, audio and visual installations, debates and workshops. On the TNT YouTube page, in the period leading up to this year’s edition, you will find interviews with the young artists present at the 2023 edition.

Registrations are also open for People of TNT (collaborating artists of theater directors: theater critics, set designers, composers, choreographers, performers, translators, playwrights, sound, light and video designers, directing graduates from the last ten years, students, master’s students, doctoral students, the academic staff of theater faculties).

For registrations, participants (actors, collaborating artists of theater directors or directing graduates from the last ten years, students, master’s students, doctoral students, the academic staff of theater faculties) are asked to complete the form available at: https://forms.gle/PKC2yNFFLeompGD38

The festival does not have a competitive character this year either, for us the dialogue and meetings between artists, the public and cultural producers being essential. At the end of the festival, the present managers and artistic directors are invited to announce future collaborations with the directors invited in the showcase, whose graduation performances will be presented in TNT. Three of the graduates who presented their productions in the TNT 2023 showcase were invited to stage at theaters throughout the country: “Marin Sorescu” National Theater Craiova, Masca Theater Bucharest, Stela Popescu Theater Bucharest, Bacovia Municipal Theater Bacău, Metropolis Theater from Bucharest and the German State Theater from Timișoara.

This year, two directors who presented their graduation performances at TNT are nominated at the UNITER Gala for the best direction with their performances staged following the selection at TNT: Irisz Kovacs with “TSCHICK. Why I stole the car”, staged at the German State Theater Timișoara and Natasza Sołtanowicz for Anomaly, the performance staged at National Theater Craiova.

The 5th International Festival of Young Filmmakers Theater Networking Talents (TNT) will take place during 4-7 July 2023, at Craiova. The performances will be presented as part of a showcase of productions by students from Romanian and international theatre directing faculties, graduates of the class of 2023.

The special guest of this edition is IVAN VÎRÎPAEV, the best-known and most frequently staged contemporary Russian-born playwright, theatre and film director, screenwriter, producer and actor. Based in Poland for more than 10 years, with more than 300 productions in theatres around the world, the playwright is currently banned from theatres in his native country because of his anti-war stance. His best-known plays include "Dansul Delhi”, „Iluzii”, „Oxygen”, or „Neliniște", also staged on important stages in Romania, such as the national theatres in Bucharest, Craiova, Sibiu, Iasi or Timisoara. In terms of aesthetics, critics place him between the directors Quentin Tarantino and Andrei Tarkovski, and his works explore irony and the orthodox spirit with finesse and cruelty. In Craiova, Ivan Vikpaev will hold two meetings with participants, inspired by the art of storytelling that his theatre explores so poetically. These are the conference "What is a play?", as well as a two-day masterclass (theatre workshop) focusing on the idea of "holistic human development", based on the structure of a play.

Official TNT selection This year's programme includes 6 Bachelor/Master performances by directors from Romania and Poland:

  • MERCURY FUR by Philip Ridley, directed by Teodora Florea (master, UNATC București)
  • SEASON IN THE LIGHT, dramaturgy and direction Aleksandra Bielewicz (master's degree, National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, Poland)
  • LITTLE LIGHT by Alice Birch, directed by Mara Bugarin (license, UNATC București)
  • PEȘTII DORM? by Jens Raschke, directed by Tania Drăghici (license, UNATC București)
  • EARTHQUAKE IN LONDON de Mike Bartlett, regia Dora Dobrovszki (master, Universitatea de Arte Târgu-Mureș)
  • RICHARD III după William Shakespeare, regia Denisa Hălăngău (license, Faculty of Theater and Film, UBB Cluj-Napoca)

As every year, TNT is organised as an artistic platform to present the freshest and strongest visions of the new generation theatre and proposes interdisciplinary workshop-meetings, debates and workshops. The festival will also continue its mission as an artistic hub, bringing together young directors, playwrights, set designers, visual artists, or theatre-makers, cultural managers or curators of theatre festivals.

Young directors will also have the opportunity to develop collaborations with professional theatres, as in previous years many of the participants have been invited to stage productions on important stages across the country.

Theater Networking Talents (TNT) is organized by the Marin Sorescu National Theatre in Craiova and the Arts and Media Department of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Craiova, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Dolj County Council.

MARȚI – 4 iulie

An innovative new digital theater project has just been given the green light to 'revolutionise' the way theater and performing arts are produced and performed across Europe.

The launch of AcuTe, a large-scale digital theater project, will take place on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at one of the most important digital art festivals in the world: Ars Electronica, which takes place in Linz, Austria.

TheDigital Theater – Democratization of a Mediumpanel will bring together artists and creators involved in ACuTe who will discuss how digital transformation will shape theater for years to come. The launch of the project will take place on an immersive 3D stage, in the setting of the mixed-reality show SH4D0W.

What is the truly transformative element in the transition from theater to digital theater? How does the medium become a space where the line between performers and receivers blurs?

This panel discussion will look at how a new approach to audiences will shape the (digital) theater scene in Europe and beyond for years to come. A new understanding of the concepts and relationships between theatre, audience, performance and space is what constitutes the digital transformation of theater as a medium. The audience is invited to exchange ideas with the participants about possible future applications of digital concepts in theater and how they want to be involved in its development.

On behalf of the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater in Craiova, Alexandru Boureanu, the manager of the theater, and George Albert Costea, actor of the Craiova National Theater and project coordinator in Romania, are participating in the event. The Romanian team also includes Ciprian Făcăeru, architect in virtual and mixed reality, designer of digitally augmented and interactive experiences, new media researcher.

The ACuTe project, which is co-funded by the European Union, brings together 14 leading European theater and research organizations that aim to develop experimental theater productions using pioneering technologies. New technologies include robots, artificial intelligence and "immersive exploratory space", each being tested by different organizations to try new ways of producing performances, telling stories on stage and getting audiences to interact and relate with art.

The experimentation will be guided by the innovative 'testbed' concept, never seen before in the performing arts, and will lead to the dissemination of knowledge to improve the skills of the wider theater and performing arts sectors.

Following the model of other sectors, ACuTe will create a "TESTBED for the cultural area". This process, an interdisciplinary integration of digital technology and co-creation, will lead to the testing and prototyping of new technologies within the three key themes of the project: new dramaturgies, stage design and audience engagement. These will be innovations in how we tell stories on stage, how they are produced and how audiences interact with them.

Partner organizations will split into three groups, matching the three test elements, to facilitate regional knowledge sharing. The work process will be supported by a series of expert residencies, training workshops and support for the development of professional capacity in the deep integration of technology in the long-term theater production process.

The key element of the project will be finding co-creation ways to reach disadvantaged audience groups and help the sector become more resilient and viable post-Covid. Similarly, ACuTe aims to provide a structured approach to digital development in this sector, which has been sporadic to date.

The 14 organizations involved in the ACuTe project are leading theaters, universities and creative arts organizations in Europe: • OULU University of Applied Sciences (Finland) • Ars Electronica (Austria) • European Theater Convention (Germany) • Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao ( Spain) • Estonian Academy of Arts (Estonia) • Saxion University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands) • Théâtre de Liège (Belgium) • Landestheater Linz (Austria) • De Toneelmakerij (Netherlands) • Slovenian National Theater Nova Gorica (Slovenia) • Det Norske Teatret (Norway) • Academy for Theater and Digitality (Germany) • Schauspielhaus Graz (Austria) • "Marin Sorescu" National Theater in Craiova (Romania)

The 7 partner theaters were selected from the ETC network - European Theater Convention (ETC), the largest network of publicly funded theaters in Europe. 5 of the partners also participated in a previous digital theater project carried out by ETC, European Theater Lab, including the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater from Craiova, which co-produced the show Idiomatic (2018).

“The ACuTe project could not come at a more crucial time for theaters and the performing arts sector. There is widespread uncertainty about the future of the industry, which has been hit hard by the COVID pandemic and is looking for new ways to re-engage and build connections with the public. The emerging technologies and innovative testing process developed from other sectors are exactly the kind of experimental tool needed at this time – to ensure the resilience, creativity and also the playfulness of the sector.”

Blair Stevenson, Senior Project Partner

“I am very happy that Teatrul Național Craiova is turning its digital theater projects almost into a strategy of the entire organization. After the European Theater Lab and the Idiomatic show in 2018, after the pandemic period in which we had the super-project The Hektomeron specially created for the online environment, in Craiova we will start a new adventure related to ACuTe. I hope that this project brings a new perspective on how a show can be thought, approached, configured, created. The artistic and technical teams of the theater, together with representatives of the Craiova National audience, assisted by top experts in interactive media technologies, will be tasked with defining and creating the show that represents them and that speaks about them. I hope we can give them all the support and support they need to do the best they can.

George Albert Costea, actor of the Craiova National Theatre, coordinator of the project in Romania

The ACuTE project runs from 2022 to 2025 and is co-financed by the European Union.

Short presentation of the show

How do you foresee the future of humanity?  Mercury Fur launches one of the most extreme scenarios possible. In a post-apocalyptic atmosphere, people are barely coping with reality, normalising the abnormal. A gang of teenagers, united by love and sick necessity, have learned to survive by distributing hallucinogenic butterflies and throwing special parties for wealthy opportunists who would pay anything to star in the darkest fantasy. An Afternoon Lived Against the Clock dynamites, in a controversial and raw style punctuated with dark humour, topics considered taboo: drug and human addiction, memory and language degradation, paedophilia, torture as entertainment, generational trauma and love in LGBTQ+ relationships.

At the end of the day, the sunset is reflected in the ruins of a shattered civilisation.

Short presentation of the director

I experiment (translation: "play consciously") with images, words, sounds, psychological undertones, physical juxtapositions in photography, theatre, poetry and performance. I feed off classical art and the relentless dialogue about it, but I want to create postmodern art out of a need for storytelling as a form of collective therapy. The theatre I make is a refuge from everyday chaos / the space where the imagination is free to ferment / a mirror of what needs to be exorcised in society, in the individual, in the common sensibility, worn out by social media, catastrophic news and the hideousness of human automation.

Short presentation of the show

Performance inspired by Arthur Rimbaud's A Season in Hell.

We are in the last working factory in Poland, which is now a museum. Before our eyes, the place that for years created and allowed people to build communities - FIRE - is fading. Two idealists have not come to terms with the closing of the factory and are still fighting at all costs to preserve their history and identity: Prom, an angry factory manager, and his colleague Maria, focused on progress and believing in change. Keeping the light on becomes their obsession. One day, a boy named Rimbo, an introverted aspiring poet, happens to come to the factory. The order of the world is turned upside down. Does Rimbo bring a chance for release? Does being close to another person take our world out of the non-existent world? What is important and what is worth preserving in a dynamically changing world?

Short presentation of the director

Aleksandra Bielewicz – theater directing student at The Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, graduate of the University of Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle and the University of Warsaw. He finished theater directing with Romeo Castellucci at the Staatsoper Under den Linden in Berlin and with Radek Rychcik at the Studio Theater in Warsaw. She was invited to the theater workshop with Krzysztof Warlikowski at the Venice Biennale. Short presentation of the show

All is going well for Mr Pantalone, until a supposedly dead guest from Turin upsets the arranged marriage between his daughter Clarice and Dr Lombardi's son Silvio. This event kicks off the plot that stars Truffaldino, a clever and quick-witted servant, but one who is always on the lookout to satisfy his own grandiose appetite. Already a servant of Florindo Aretusi, he becomes the servant of Clarice's first fiancé, Federigo Rasponi, who is in fact Beatrice, his sister desperately searching for her missing lover. Throughout we witness the dramas of the story's loving couples, but presented in a dizzying manner thanks to the brisk pace, playful dialogue and numerous comic poses the characters find themselves in. A Slave to Two Masters is a performance with elements of commedia dell'arte, in which the comic is easily interwoven with the tragic, in which characters as individual as possible find themselves in the most absurd of stories, but stories that reveal the most profound aspects of the human condition, such as the triumph of the eternal force of love in a petty and mercantile society.

Short presentation of the show

Can we find a way to come to terms with the darkness or will we always look for a guiding light?

"Little Light" by Alice Birch is a poignant and mysterious piece that builds around a family reunion in which family members are faced with the painful memory of a lost loved one. Through a series of snippets from their past, the four characters share long untold stories as the audience is left to piece together clues to the identity of the missing person. The play explores themes of grief, memory and the struggle to free oneself from the past, as family members wrestle with their emotions and attempt to găsească o cale de a lăsa totul în urmă și de a merge mai departe. „Little Light” face să existe frântura unei speranței și a unui fascicul de lumină chiar și în cele mai întunecate momente.

Short presentation of the director

Mara Bugarin is 21 years old and is from Timișoara. There she graduated from the German high school "Nikolaus Lenau" and had contact with the theater since the age of 10 - both as a collaborator at the German State Theater and in a youth theater troupe, NiL. Next comes the undergraduate studies in Theater Directing, within UNATC. During the faculty period, she worked on several projects as an actress, including "Metronome" (2022), "Export Only" (2022) and "Moromeții 3". He believes that you must remain detached from yourself when working on a project, because he wants to release stories into the world that may change, however slightly, those who encounter them. He believes in a theater with political and social implications that responds to the needs of the society in which he lives.

"Are the fish asleep?" is a deep and sensitive performance, in which the theme of the loss of a loved one is hidden under the guise of a colourful and story-filled universe, in which some heroes, although not immortal, become a reminder that big and serious problems find relief.

Short presentation of the director

Tania Drăghici, director of the show "Are the fish sleeping?" by Jens Raschke, is a final year student in Theatre Directing at the National University of Theatre and Film Arts "I. L. Caragiale" in Bucharest. Tania is a sensitive but strong character and manages, without any hesitation, to bring these attributes to the audience through Ella, the only character in her show.

Duration of the show :  1 hour, no break

Short presentation of the show

THE SITUATION swants to be:

A show for everyone,

It's not that hard, it keeps you close.

The boys have their phenomenal swing,

But as always the girls take the lead.

The coincidence means that the 4 main/secondary actors and extras will perform until exhaustion 5 situations chosen with great style by the two coordinators - Darko and Cătălina a.k.a (stage direction).

Darko Huruială and Cătălina Vînătoru are graduates of the theater faculty in Craiova (license & master), they are very passionate about the performing arts (more Darko), they are very good at organization (more Cătălina), but with all that they have one thing in common: They love to torment their colleagues: Corina Oprea and Gloria Mihail - the two queens of spades from the show in question - will shine in the lights of the Led strip, dressed up more like a Saturday night in Disco Bar Melody.

Alexandru Purcaru and Adrian Tudor - the broken-hearted Jews - drown their bitterness in modernist verses, patriotic hits and of course in a bottle of Murfatlar - with soda. Special mention regarding the settlement: Comrade Adrian Mărgărit - under the production name: Ghimpe - is found to be responsible for enabling the scenography in the tavern.

Short presentation of the director

DARKO HURUIALĂ is a performer, actor and director based in Fado pub Craiova.

With the experience I gained in the industry, I honed my skills and developed a style, which I like to say is all my own. I am passionate about creating performances that leave a short-lived (but powerful) impression on the audience. Most of the time, I play on stage based on ordinary emotions and stories from ordinary people's lives, stories that are generally ignored. Besides my work on stage, I like to explore new mediums and experiment with different forms of artistic expression. From painting to music to different cultures I am always pushing myself to grow and evolve as an artist. If you are interested in learning more about me and my work, see you at Fado Garden on July 6 at 10pm.

Short presentation of the show

Burlesque strip shows, nightmares, social collapse, population explosion, global paranoia. A fast-paced succession of people, scenes and decades, a big-city meltdown in which three sisters try to cope with their shattered lives and loves, while their freaky scientist father predicts global catastrophe. A pervasive fear of the future and guilty pleasures over the excesses of the present.

Short presentation of the director

Dóra Dobrovszki was born in Budapest. After graduating from high school, she studied acting and worked for a while as an actress at the Petőfi Theater in Veszprém. She always wanted to become a director, but for a long time she did not feel mature enough for this activity. In addition to acting, she consciously prepared herself: trying to gain experience, working as an assistant to several directors. Since 2017, he studied theater at the University of Arts in Târgu Mureș, in the class of Ildikó Ungvári-Zrínyi. She was involved in numerous projects as an assistant and/or dramaturg, and later as a director. In the production "Iarba Roșie" of the Tompa Miklós Company from Târgu Mureș, she worked as an assistant to the director Benő Balázs Fehér. From 2021, he continued his studies at the master's degree in directing at the University of Arts in Târgu Mureș, in László Bocsárdi's class. Performances: A.P. Short presentation of the show

Richard III is an exciting and courageous reinterpretation of Shakespeare's masterpiece, tempting with its mysterious and dark atmosphere, which challenges our senses.  We are in a sick world, suffocated by cynicism, populated by characters who are both victims and aggressors, trapped in a desperate struggle for survival. Always hiding behind a mask and with an insatiable appetite for annihilation, Richard seems to be the perfect actor for this game between life and death. With a smirk on his lips, he fights everyone else, so that by eliminating them he can face his own demons. In the background, a mirror in which we look and look at ourselves; a mirror symbolic of the times we live in, of a world that is self-destructing before our eyes.

12:00 – Foaier TNC – TNTalks – „Teatrul 2.0. Comunitatea viitorului”

debate moderated by Iulia Popovici

Argument: The transition from 'analogue theatre' or 1.0 to its digital version or 2.0 means rethinking the way we produce, create, present, communicate, watch or participate in a contemporary theatre performance. How does the social role of a performance institution reconfigure itself based on these transformations? What new models of creation emerge? How do we perform as performers in new environments and among new digital technologies? How are roles in artistic and technical teams being renegotiated? Can theatre be the core of communities from local to global? If so, how do we think about building, sustaining and enriching them?

Presentations followed by debate and Q&A:

Marina HANGANU: Telepresence and robots in extended theatre

Alex ZLĂVOG: Performativity on social media: exploring human and social experiences through digital tools
