We educate together

The "Marin Sorescu" National Theater from Craiova is launching the cultural-educational program EDUCĂM ÎMPREUNĂ. The program runs from 2022-2026, is aimed at children from Craiova and the Oltenia Region, and aims to ensure the process of cultural and historical education among students.

Through the EDUCATION TOGETHER Program, the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater puts into practice one of the objectives assumed by its own statute, namely: it realizes, in partnership with pre-university education institutions, educational programs through and for theater, training workshops, acting courses for young people, as well as children's shows and organizes, alone or in partnership or hosts documentary, plastic and visual art exhibitions, musical events.

Starting from this premise, in the period 2022-2026, the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater is launching the cultural-educational project  WE EDUCATE TOGETHER, a project that aims to ensure the process of cultural and historical education among students in Craiova and the Oltenia region, as well as in the cities of the project partners.

The proposed educational process is intended to be carried out in a friendly, attractive manner that will facilitate the acquisition of basic knowledge in the fields of history and theatre.

The project will run both in Craiova and in the partner cities. The first two partnerships of the project signed by the National Theatre of Craiova are with Muzeul Național Peleș from Sinaia and with National Museum of Transylvanian History from Cluj Napoca, followed by those concluded with local institutional partners such as Craiova University via Faculty of Social Sciences –  Department of History and Facultatea de Litere – Departamentul de Artă și MediaDolj County Council via General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection Dolj and Dolj County School Inspectorate.

The programme includes multiple projects and activities, carried out in the premises of the theatre and, as it unfolds, its content will develop according to the results obtained and the response received from participants and partners.

The organisers hope that this cultural and educational programme, held under the motto

WE INVEST IN EDUCATION. INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

to create new bridges of interdisciplinary communication and ensure the necessary prerequisites for the harmonious development of children and adolescents in schools and social welfare centres.

Visits by groups of pupils are carried out on the basis of appointment requests to the Dolj County School Inspectorate.

....Despite the conventional education she received in Coburg, Maria was naturally gifted with the ability to admire beauty, in all its forms. "The beautiful awakened in me an ardent, even pagan love." His whole life is followed by his love for flowers and his residences, which he called "dream houses"...

The HISTORIC auction house from Bucharest, a partner of the Marin Sorescu National Theater in the EDUCĂM ÎMPREUNĂ program, makes available to the program a collection of personal objects of Her Majesty Queen Maria, such as the baptism certificate, photo albums, postcards.

The visits of groups of children within the EDUCĂM IMPREUNĂ program will also include participation in the drawing, painting, theater workshops in the specially arranged space in the theater foyer,

The meeting with the magic universe of the theater will be facilitated by the theater game sessions.

"These games demonstrate anyone's ability to become an actor. This workshop is a kind of trailer of our job and how acting can help the student in improving his school work and in acquiring the quality of his studies. Acting is a job full of passion and dedication but not impossible and not practiced only by those born for it. In drama schools, students learn that their talent is only 1% of the job, the rest, they say, is sweat. Acting exercises in the education of children and adults, even if they take them out of their comfort zone, do not inhibit them. It is said that the second fear after the fear of death is that of speaking in public. But the child does not have this fear because he does not have the fear of death either... And then he is the first to enjoy the game and propose in turn and he will easily, easily acquire another personality, the artistic one thanks to which he will change something in his friends , in his teachers because he will most likely ask questions and study differently: more applied, constructive, he will always want to make a team, he will not be chaotic in decisions and actions because he is alone. People small and large who come to understand that health and culture are the foundation of a civilized world will be the first to step into this world. That is why the team of this project wants to become the strategic partner of the child who will be the trainer of tomorrow through this cultural route. During the workshop, we will strive to create a special environment in which the student can obtain as much information as possible about the importance of art in his life and how he can use acting to make the study of any chosen field easier and give him a greater freedom of expression"

Alina Mangra - Assistant Professor, Department of Arts and Media - University of Craiova, PhD in Theater Arts (National University of Theater and Cinematography, Bucharest, 2013), actress of the National Theater "Marin Sorescu" Craiova.

The educational process includes watching video materials with important moments in the history of Romania, explained to the children in an attractive way by the students of the Faculty of Social Sciences - History of the University of Craiova.

Theater and history books are available for sale, as well as souvenir items illustrating historical moments and theater personalities.

Visits by groups of pupils are carried out on the basis of appointment requests to the Dolj County School Inspectorate.

The show ALEGEREA at the National History Museum of Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca

20 February 2023

The Marin Sorescu National Theatre in Craiova will present the performance of CHOICE, based on the one-act play written in 1960 in Versoix by Their Majesties King Michael I and Queen Anne.  The event will take place on Monday 20 February 2023 at the National Museum of Transylvanian History Cluj-Napoca and includes two performances at 18:00 and 20:00 respectively.

The show is directed by Alexandru Boureanu and Raluca Păun, the scenography is signed by Lia Dogaru, the live music is composed and performed live by AG Weinberger, Florin Constantinescu signs the video design and the cast of the show is made up of the actors of the National Craiove: Claudiu Mihail, Marian Politic , Gabriel Marciu, Raluca Păun and the child Vladimir Politic.

In the volume A war, an exile, a life, Her Majesty Queen Ana testified:

That evening we began to write our lives: his life under communism, mine in the middle of a frivolous world. And then, together, we discovered a common character, the friend, who came with a third world, with a third voice. That of cleanliness, of purity. We continued to write and the lines came, they lined up naturally on the paper. The whole story was, therefore, written together; we intertwined our thoughts, ideas, fantasy. As I had done up until then in real life, as I have done ever since.

We were talking, writing, showing each other what we had written ourselves... It's curious, we were both writing without being able to stop. We were inspired! I called the pieceChoice. I wrote it first in English, then in French and, years later, in Romanian. Only we couldn't find an end to it. And that's because we didn't know what answer to give to this world, how to contribute ourselves to the healing of the wounds that had touched us. The ending came from the soul and mind of both, sitting and reflecting together. The solution was [...] love. This is what we decided to do with the characters and our story in the play: to direct them towards love.

The Choice that the show's creative team makes is as simple as it is profound. Each of us, in different forms, reflects on the condition, role and place we have in our existence. Some express these thoughts, while others keep them locked away in the chest of their minds. From this idea, the director uses technological means to give the viewer the feeling that this meditation is in his own mind. In a simple setting with discreet touches of video design, the actors deliver the lines accompanied by the omnipresent music, which functions as a consciousness of the performance.

The play is loaded with meanings and raises issues of a philosophical nature, in a world caught in the struggle between two opposing ideologies. Here the inner struggle of the man caught between his weaknesses and his virtues is distinguished. Good in opposition to Evil. Darkness with Light. And alegerea, salvarea noastră, nu poate fi decât Iubirea.

THE CHOICE:an invitation to reflection, a moving play about man and his place in the universe, about the spirit, passions and temptations of the human being.

Have you ever wondered what theater and dentistry have in common?

Why would competence be friends with responsibility, seriousness with empathy, performance with genuine emotion?

Here are some answers:

  • Culture and Education for health go hand in hand, from the first tooth and throughout life, they make us become more masters of ourselves, more determined!
  • With a beautiful and healthy smile, you, the viewer, can be a star, alongside the actors who reveal unique emotional experiences to you!

As part of the EDUCATION TOGETHER program, the Dr. Leahu Craiova Dental Clinic specialists support dental education sessions: brushing teeth, dental hygiene, habits and specific skills young and middle age for the groups of children participating in the program.

The night of the museums

With a history of over 170 years, the National Theater in Craiova represents an important landmark on the cultural map in Romania and abroad.

Starting from 1991, the exceptional performances of Silviu Purcărete, "Ubu Rex with Scenes from Macbeth", "Titus Andronicus", with the great actor Ștefan Iordache in the main role, and "Phaedra", "Danaidele", "Orestia", "How you want or The night from the breaking of the fair", "Measure for measure", "A storm", bearing the signature of the same great director, meant as many international recognitions, participation in the most important festivals of the world: Edinburgh, Avignon, Holland Festival from Amsterdam, Wiener Festwochen in Vienna, Theater Der Welt in Munich, Shakespeare Festival in Tokyo, Israel Festival in Jerusalem, Theater Festival of the Americas in Montreal, Melbourne Arts Festival, Performing Arts Festival in Sao Paulo , European Theater Convention Festival in Stockholm, Lincoln Center Festival in New York, Theater of Nations Festival in Seoul and many others.

In May 1997, the famous British magazine "The Stage" wrote about the National Theater in Craiova: "You sometimes wonder if this company is not the best composed, since Brecht's Berliner Ensemble, or maybe since Peter's Royal Shakespeare Company Brook!".

In 2016, the Marin Sorescu National Theatre organized for the first time in Romania an edition of the Europe Theatre Awards, a prestigious theatrical event where the European "Oscars of Theatre" are awarded.

The National Theater in Craiova is the first theater in Romania to be awarded the "Cultural Merit" decoration in the rank of Commander, as a sign of special appreciation for the exceptional achievements of its team (2004). In 2020, upon the completion of 170 years of existence, our theater received the "Cultural Merit" decoration in the rank of Grand Officer, category D-Performing Arts, as a sign of appreciation for the important contribution made to the cultural development of our country, for the dedication with which he illustrated himself in cultural life, by promoting a quality artistic education among the young generations, proving excellence at the national and international level. Also in 2020, the Custodian of the Romanian Crown, Princess Margareta, in a ceremony held at the Elisabeta Palace, conferred the "Nihil Sine Deo" royal decoration on the Craiova National.

An important moment in the recent history of the National Theater in Craiova is the founding of the International Shakespeare Festival in 1994 (director-founder, Emil Boroghină). The first five editions were held every three years, and since 2006, the event has been held every two years. A complex cultural event, the International Shakespeare Festival is now regarded as one of the great Shakespeare Festivals of the world, where exceptional performances directed by Declan Donellan, Eimuntas Nekrosius, Peter Brook, Silviu Purcărete, Robert Wilson, Lev Dodin, Eugenio Barba, Pipo Delbono, Yoshihiro Kurita, Oskaras Khorsunovas, Thomas Ostermeier, Yuri Butusov, Max Webster, Yukio Ninagawa, Robert Lepage.

Since 2018, the artistic director of the festival is Vlad Drăgulescu, Vice-President of the European Network of Shakespeare Festivals and Artistic Director of the Craiova National.

The 13th edition of the International Shakespeare Festival offered the public a number of 160 events in 20 spaces, indoor and outdoor, and was watched by more than 40,000 spectators, arousing the interest of locals, tourists, and critics and cultural journalists as well as guests, from all over the world, present in Craiova.

Whether it was theater performances, concerts, film screenings or happenings, Shakespeare encompassed the entire city, from the Great Hall of the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater, the "Colibri" Children's and Youth Theater, the Oltenia Philharmonic, The Students' House of Culture and up to the Summer Theater in the Nicolae Romanescu Park, the Botanical Garden. The neighborhoods, squares and fairs of Craiova came into contact with Shakespeare's work thanks to the itinerant performances presented in this festival. Book launches, conferences, debates, commemorations and meetings with great international directors organically completed the festival program.

THEATER NETWORKING TALENTS

Another event of international scope organized by the National Theater of Craiova is the International Festival of Young Directors, initiated in 2017 under the direction of Alexandru Boureanu, an event which in its first edition brought together theater faculties from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, in the desire to emphasize the future artistic potential of theater schools in Romania and Central and Eastern Europe.

Along with the "Marin Sorescu" National Theater in Craiova and the University of Craiova, the organizers of this festival were the Romanian Theater Union, the National University of Theater and Cinematography "I. L. Caragiale"(U.N.A.T.C.) and the Craiova Student House.

The general objective of the project is to create a meeting and dialogue platform for young creators in the field of performing arts, focusing primarily on theater directors who graduated in the current year, by designing and creating an online multimedia platform.

An important feature of this festival is the major potential of integrare in viața socială a tinerilor absolvenți ai unei instituții de învățământ superior prin posibilitatea vizionării spectacolelor de către manageri de instituții, producători de teatru/film, selecționeri de festivaluri in vederea unor colaborării sau angajării acestora.
