"Enigma Pacepa" book launch

The National Theater "Marin Sorescu" Craiova is hosting the launch of the volume "Enigma Pacepa" (Ed. Curtea Veche, 2023). The author, Ștefano Romei (Italy), is an independent researcher in contemporary history. It will be in Craiova, Thursday November 16, from 17:00, and will be presented by Ovidiu Șimonca, together with the writers Nicolae Coande and Camelia Radulian. The translator of the book, Steliana Croicu, will also be present at the launch.

In "Enigma Pacepa", the reader will relive one of the great espionage-counter-espionage stories of communist Romania and, at the end of these pages, will certainly know more about this so complicated "Pacepa case" and about its intersection with the long reign of to Nicolae Ceaușescu, almost exactly in the middle of it. - Adrian Cioroianu

Stefano Romei was born in Tuscany in 1968. He is a professional historian, writer and journalist, a graduate of the University of Florence. In 1997 he graduated in Political Science, majoring in History, with a thesis on the historical right, and in 1999 he obtained, cum laude, a master's degree in Communication and Media, with a thesis on the Moro case. An independent researcher in contemporary history, in 1998 he published a book of testimonies about the fascist massacre of San Pancrazio on June 29, 1944, and in 2001, for the Gramsci Institute in Tuscany, the book "Le radici e le ali. Impegno, quotidianità e governo della sinistra in Toscana traverso le storie dei suoi protagonists". Stefano Romei also collaborates with Modern Italy, Cambridge University's periodical, revealing in an original way historical characters and events that marked the Cold War period, such as the mysteries of the Moro case. The book "Enigma Pacepa", published by the Curtea Veche Publishing House, is based on Romanian and foreign documents and discusses the consequences at the level of secret services and the functioning of the Romanian state, after Ion Mihai Pacepa "defects" and remains in the West, in 1978.

Ovidiu Șimonca, born in Iasi on March 11, 1968, graduated from the Faculty of History and Philosophy at the University "Al. I. Cuza" from Iasi (1992). Published, during the faculty, in the Student Opinion, where he made his journalistic debut. He worked at Monitorul de Iaşi, Radio Nord-Est, BBC Romania, Radio Total, Evenimentul zilei, Polirom Publishing, Cotidianul, Observator cultural, Timpul. He is currently the collection coordinator for Romanian authors at Curtea Veche Publishing. He participated in the establishment of the Journalism Department at the University "Al. I. Cuza" Iasi. He was a laureate of the Romanian Press Club Awards, 2003 edition, in the "Talk-show radio" section, for a show broadcast by BBC Romania. At the Cultural Journalism Gala, the 1st edition, organized by the "Timpul" Cultural Foundation in December 2008, he won the Award for "Interview", for an interview with the writer Mircea Horia Simionescu and published in the Cultural Observer.
