Playwright Ivan Vîrîpaev, the special guest at TNT 2023

6 performances by young directors in this year's festival selection

The 5th International Festival of Young Filmmakers Theater Networking Talents (TNT) will be held this year during 4-7 iulie, at Craiova. The performances will be presented as part of a showcase of productions by students from Romanian and international theatre directing faculties, graduates of the class of 2023.

The special guest of this edition is Ivan Vîrîpaev, the best-known and most frequently staged contemporary Russian-born playwright, theatre and film director, screenwriter, producer and actor. Based in Poland for more than 10 years, with more than 300 productions in theatres around the world, the playwright is currently banned from theatres in his native country because of his anti-war stance. His best-known plays include "Dansul Delhi”, „Iluzii”, „Oxygen”, or „Neliniște”, mounted also on important stages in Romania, such as those of the national theaters in Bucharest, Craiova, Sibiu, Iași or Timișoara. Aesthetically, critics place him between directors Quentin Tarantino and Andrei Tarkovsky, and his works explore irony and orthodox spirit with finesse and cruelty. In Craiova, Ivan Vîrîpaev will hold 2 meetings with the participants, inspired by the art of storytelling that his theater explores with so much poetry. It is about the conference "What is a play?", as well as a two-day masterclass (theatre workshop), focused on the idea of "holistic human development", starting from the structure of a play.

Official TNT selection this year includes 6 bachelor/master shows by directors from Romania and Poland:

  • EARTHQUAKE IN LONDON by Mike Bartlett, directed by Dora Dobrovszki (master's degree, Târgu-Mureș University of Arts)
  • LITTLE LIGHT by Alice Birch, directed by Mara Bugarin (license, UNATC Bucharest)
  • MERCURY FUR by Philip Ridley, directed by Teodora Florea (master, UNATC Bucharest)
  • DO FISHES SLEEP? by Jens Raschke, directed by Tania Drăghici (BA, UNATC Bucharest)
  • RICHARD III after William Shakespeare, directed by Denisa Hălăngău (BA, Faculty of Theater and Film, UBB Cluj-Napoca)
  • SEASON IN THE LIGHT, dramaturgy and direction by Aleksandra Bielewicz (master, National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, Poland)

As in every edition, TNT is organized as an artistic platform to present the freshest and most powerful visions in the theater of the new generation and also proposes interdisciplinary laboratory-meetings, debates and workshops. The festival will also continue its mission as an artistic hub, bringing together young directors, playwrights, set designers, visual artists or theater scholars, with cultural managers or curators of theater festivals.

Young directors will also have the opportunity to develop collaborations with professional theatres, as in previous years many of the participants have been invited to stage productions on important stages across the country.

Theater Networking Talents (TNT) is organized by the Marin Sorescu National Theatre in Craiova and the Arts and Media Department of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Craiova, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Dolj County Council.
