What does a comedy about labor relations in a dying textile industry look like? And what does a comedy about working in the fashion industry, a field with an extremely uncertain future in the context of a lack of regulations, look like? What a coincidence and how lucky you are to ask these questions because: Odd Couture este un spectacol despre două lumi complet diferite, dar interconectate – fabricile de textile și show-urile din industria de modă.
In Odd Couture, a talking vest tells us its story, from the pranks between the workers and the union's battles with the management of the textile factory where it was designed, to the accidents backstage at the fashion shows where it is displayed and the pressures on young models trying to enter this industry. On its journey, the talking vest meets factory managers on the verge of bankruptcy, designers on their first collection, talking chickens who tell it about the economy and many other characters... You'll see at the show!
Odd Couture is based on consistent documentation, through interviews, discussions and informal meetings, and the reading of sociological or economic materials about the fashion industry, in a local and international context.
The show is the result of the 2024 School of Political Theatre residency, held in Bârlad and Bucharest in August-November 2024, during which a team of artists at the beginning of their careers experimented with the development and construction of a theatre show about relationships and work issues. During the residency, the team was guided by artists with experience in political theatre (Paula Dunker, Mihaela Michailov, Katia Pascariu, David Schwartz).
The show is produced within the multi-annual program Generator Colectiv, co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.
