"In order to be presented, this play requires neither a stage, nor long rehearsals, nor a specific setting, nor learning the text, nor any other obligations on the part of the two performers. The text is intended to be read simply, aloud, by an actor and an actress, more or less of the same age, seated at a table next to each other (…) The two listen to each other throughout the play, feverishly and passionately, somewhat as they would listen to a radio-telephone message from a voice coming from far, very far away."

1990. R. GURNEY was born on November 1, 1930 in Buffalo, New York, USA. He was a writer known for the plays 3 by Cheever (1979), Television Theatre (1953), and Trying Times (1987). Gurney was a professor in the literature department of the Department of Humanities at MIT before becoming a successful playwright. Nominated for the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the play "The Dining Room" and the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the play "Love Letters." The play "The Cocktail Hour," from the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson at the James A. Doolittle Theatre (University of California) in Los Angeles, California, was awarded the Drama-Logue Award for production in 1990. He received the 1990 Drama-Logue Award for writing for "The Cocktail Hour" at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson at the James A. Doolittle Theatre (University of California) in Los Angeles, California. He died on June 13, 2017, in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.
