What is Salzburg? And what does it mean to be a true Salzburger?
The answers to these questions vary – depending on whether you were born and raised here, moved here later, or are just passing through the city. Romanian-born director Cristina Giurgea explores images, stereotypes, and perspectives about Salzburg in her master’s project MADE IN AUSTRIA, questioning and deconstructing ideas of “home” and identity by investigating belonging as a social construct. A network of local voices and interactive elements invite the audience to challenge assumptions about national and cultural identity, belonging, and the true meaning of the word “home” in our interconnected world. In the end, do stereotypes truly reflect the real inhabitants, or do they just endlessly reproduce the same images that no one can find themselves in anymore?
Cristina Giurgea
(1991, Piatra-Neamț, România)
Cristina Giurgea is a theater director born in Romania and based in Vienna, Austria. She studied theater directing at the National University of Theater and Cinematography in Bucharest and made her debut at the National Theater in Bucharest with Eden de Eugene O’Brien.
Active in the Romanian theatrical scene, her works often explore feminism and contemporary Romanian literature. She is also an important voice in children's theater, with a strong focus on early education, having written and directed five shows dedicated to children between 0 and 3 years old.
Since 2023, she has been a member of the artistic collective magggi – Verein für dokumentarische Performanceformate, with which she develops community projects focused on sustainability, community involvement, and the amplification of female voices in Austria.
His most recent work, Hergestellt in Österreich (Salzburg edition), represents his graduation performance at the Department of Applied Theatre at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
