Look back with anger

Synopsis

Look Back in Anger tells the story of a young couple, Alison and Jimmy Porter, who struggle to cope with class conflicts and navigate a declining marriage in 1950s England. Alison comes from an upper-class family, while Jimmy, although well-educated, has working-class roots. The conflict between the two social universes has a profound impact on their relationship, generating tension and misunderstandings. The show explores themes such as social divisions, personal frustrations and communication difficulties in a marriage where love and resentment coexist. The drama highlights the challenges brought about by social status and cultural expectations, reflecting the complexity of interpersonal relationships in the historical context of the era.

"The performance of the young master's students of the Department of Arts and Media of the Faculty of Letters, University of Craiova, (…) delivers a new type of revolt, a domestic/domesticated revolt, a revolt on the couch, and the secondary takes center stage, the family drama precedes the generational drama. Alexandru Boureanu and his students test the resistance and relevance of a classic text, propose an exercise in transcribing this controlled revolt into the dramatic performance. (…) Elena Ianichi is the perfect choice, a composition of resignation and fragility, her performance explores contradictory hypostases, between apologies and accusations, she enters an implosion, unseen, unheard, unimportant, she is disarmed in the face of Jimmy's destructive energy, who has a pleasure in finding forms/formulas of humiliation, the most spectacular is the tirade in which she looks up the definition of the word inanimate in the dictionary and discovers that the term inanimate it fits Alison's personality exactly. (…) Adrian Tudor, a receptive and generous play partner, masters the role well and, in his performance, Cliff becomes relevant in the show's economy.

The challenge of playing Jimmy Porter falls to Lucian Vlăsceanu, and it is a challenge because the antihero/protagonist in 1956 was the voice of a generation full of anger and anarchy, of grandiose aspirations (but also an abusive misogynist), but in 2024 the hero is a non-hero, a loser and an abuser, and it is quite complicated to navigate through all these paradigm reversals. (…) In the role of Helena, Nadine Urs intuits the character's drift, the ambiguity of her actions that end the "pseudo"-domestic harmony and then reinstate it by deciding to leave."
